GMC TO PROVIDE ANDROID AUTO TO MORE DRIVERS
Big news was recently announced that should be compelling for Android smartphone users who are also interested in purchasing a new GMC vehicle. The automaker says that the 2016 Yukon, Canyon and Sierra models that come with the optional Intellilink system with an eight-inch touchscreen can be outfitted for Android Auto. The new feature will be available through dealerships nationwide in the United States starting in March of 2016, providing greater value for a number of drivers and passengers.
It’s not necessary to wait until next year to purchase one of the compatible 2016 GMC models. Instead, consumers can buy one with the eight-inch infotainment screen included as part of the connectivity features. Once March of next year rolls around, they can go back to the dealership and have the upgrade installed for free.
Already, Apple CarPlay is available in GMC vehicles through the optional IntelliLink system, which is a big plus for iPhone users. Between that and Android Auto, the majority of smartphones on the market today can easily be connected to a GMC brand truck or SUV, offering greater functionality than ever before.
GMC has been pushing connectivity in a big way in recent years as a way to demonstrate that the brand is at the forefront of automotive innovation. In fact, connectivity has become a big focal point of GMC’s truck and SUV interior technologies. Another example of advanced vehicle connectivity solutions is the OnStar 4G LTE mobile Internet connection with built-in WiFi hotspot, which is a convenient way to provide drivers and passengers with a fast data link virtually anywhere they venture. The feature keeps people happy and entertained during trips of any length, considering they can use it to stream music, movies and do any number of other things online. The technology was first released for the 2015 model year and can accommodate up to seven devices at a single time.
According to Duncan Aldred, U.S. vice president of Buick and GMC, having Android Auto and Apple CarPlay available for the 2016 lineup of trucks and SUVs marks a new benchmark in vehicle connectivity. The technology offers improved conveniences such as the ability to access driving directions, restaurant information, weather forecasts and more without having to look at the smartphone’s screen while driving.
There are a number of differences between the two smartphone connectivity options, with each of them leveraging elements that are familiar to users. For example, Android Auto works with Google Now, Google Maps, Google Play Music, WhatsApp, Spotify and more. Either one has voice controls, which are activated by simply pressing a button on the steering wheel. Drivers can keep their attention on the task of controlling the vehicle and their eyes on the road, helping prevent crashes caused by distractions.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both simple for people to use, making them convenient features.Whenever the smartphone isn’t connected to the vehicle, a “Projection” icon appears on the IntelliLink touchscreen. Once the device is securely connected using the truck or SUV’s USB port, either the Android Auto or Apple CarPlay symbol is populated on the display.
Smartphone owners must have a device that’s compatible for the connectivity features in a 2016 GMC Sierra, Canyon or Yukon to function properly. The Android Lollipop 5.0 operating system or above is required for Android Auto. For Apple CarPlay, an iPhone 5 or later is necessary.
Before smartphone users can use compatible apps with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, they have to be downloaded successfully onto the device. Customers need to also be aware that data plan rates apply to their devices if they’re not connected to the vehicle’s WiFi.
