The days when pickup trucks were viewed primarily as utilitarian work vehicles is long gone. Today, pickups are driven by a wide range of people for many different reasons. Style and attitude are one major draw. Pickups embody a tough, masculine, aggressive character that no other vehicle can match. Manufacturers have increasingly responded to the style-conscious segment of the truck buying population with head-turning options packages and special editions.
The 2015 Canyon Nightfall Edition begins with GMC’s all new midsize truck and adds numerous extras and features that will be sure make it stand out on the street. The extroverted pickup is an excellent choice for drivers who aren’t afraid of being noticed. Its big wheels and all-black monochrome color scheme imbue it with a stylishly sinister attitude.

The Nightfall Edition is offered as an options package on SLE crew cab models. The package consists of Onyx Black paint, 18-inch aluminum wheels with “Dark Argent” painted accents, polished exhaust tips, an all-black front grille, black entry/exit steps, a spray-in bed liner, automatic climate control and a remote start feature.

“The new Canyon Nightfall Edition expands the Canyon lineup and gives style-conscious customers another choice,” stated Duncan Aldred, GMC Sales and Marketing’s vice president. “Importantly, customers get the great looks of the Canyon Nightfall Edition and its unique content at a greater value than ordering the features separately.”

In addition, the truck includes everything that comes with other SLE models. SLE is the Canyon’s upscale trim level. It includes niceties such as body-color outside mirrors and door handles, fog lights, a folding rear bench seat, keyless entry, a rear window defogger, improved interior materials, an overhead storage console, a tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, cruise control and an 8-inch touchscreen control panel. Also standard are Bluetooth connectivity, GM’s IntelliLink infotainment system, the OnStar system, Siri Eyes Free for iPod integration, satellite radio, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot for internet access anywhere there’s a cellular connection.

The 2015 Canyon Nightfall Edition reflects the growing popularity of pickup truck customization. A significant percentage of pickup buyers want their new ride to be “special.” In fact, GMC has stated that approximately 40 percent of all 2015 Canyon orders include at least one item from the brand’s extensive accessories catalog. For some buyers the Nightfall Edition will likely serves a “jumping off point” for further customization. Younger buyers, in particular, are enthusiastic about using their vehicle as a means of personal expression.

The 2015 Canyon Nightfall Edition, like all new GMC Canyons, will be available with one of two engines: a 2.5-liter inline four and a 3.6-liter V-6. Both are modern engines tuned with performance and better fuel economy in mind. The four-cylinder unit produces a healthy 200 horsepower and 191 lb.-ft. of torque. Although a six-speed manual is offered on models equipped with the lower trim levels, the SLT version comes paired exclusively with a six-speed automatic. If you have a heavy load to haul, then upgrading to the V-6 is a smart idea. It puts out 305 horsepower and 269 lb.-ft. of torque. The six-speed automatic is, again, the sole transmission choice. Both engines are available with rear – or four-wheel drive.

Improved fuel economy was one of the top things GMC’s engineers focused on for the new Canyon. This has traditionally been a weak spot for pickup trucks, which typically sacrifice efficiency for strength and utility. It represents a substantial improvement relative to earlier midsize trucks.

The inline-four-equipped Canyon is EPA-rated at 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway with a combined rating of 22 mpg in rear-wheel-drive trim. With four-wheel-drive, those numbers drop slightly to 19 mpg city, 25 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined. There is a surprisingly small fuel efficiency hit for upgrading to the larger engine. The V-6 powered Canyon received a score of 18 mpg city, 26 mpg city and 21 combined. Buyers of the four-wheel-drive, V-6-powered Canyon can expect 17 mpg city, 24 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined.

The 2015 Canyon Nightfall Edition isn’t just good-looking and powerful, it also boasts a full complement of up-to-date safety features. All models come with four wheel disc brakes with ABS, traction control, stability control and a rear view camera. A complete array of airbags — including front, front side and side curtain — are also standard. The OnStar telematics system offers stolen vehicle identification, roadside assistance and emergency crash notification.
